From the pastor

Dear church family,

Greetings in the precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ.  This is the time of the year that we recognize our graduates.  It is an important step in their lives.  They have worked long and hard to accomplish this milestone.  They have earned it.  Congratulations!  (See the cover page for a list of our graduates.)

The graduation services are called commencement services.  Commencement refers to a beginning rather than an ending.  Graduation should focus on what is ahead, more than what is behind.  Now that they have completed this part of their education they are ready to proceed to the next stage; perhaps more school, a career, or marriage.  Graduation can be both exciting and scary.  Exciting for what has been accomplished.  Scary for what lies ahead.

Peter tells each of us who are believers in Christ that we are “a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God” (1 Peter 2:9).  What tremendous privileges and wonderful blessings He has bestowed upon us.  That also entails a great responsibility.  It can be both exciting and a little scary.

As each of us looks forward to what God has in store for us, let’s be willing to take risks.  Rev. John Cook challenged us to engage our culture.  He is a  missionary to a number of countries in Asia, and he told us many exciting stories of what God is doing over there.  But throughout our Men’s Retreat and our four service times on Sunday, he encouraged us to be witnesses right here in North East.  Every one of us has a part to play in God’s plan to reach the world.  God brings people into our neighborhood, work place, school, or into our lives somehow and we need to take the opportunity to speak up for our Lord.

Some may become missionaries and go to the far reaches of the world.  But God is bringing the world to us.  Without ever leaving Maryland we can talk to those who have come from places where we have sent missionaries.  Perhaps they have come to study, find work, or to seek asylum.  In the last few years he told us that 600,000 Iraqis have immigrated to the U.S.!

Let’s ask God to open our eyes to the many opportunities around us.  Let’s ask Him for the courage and strength we will need to follow through and do something.  Let’s engage our world.  Let’s take a risk for Jesus.

 Your fellow laborer with Christ.

 Dr. Stephen D. Hokuf

A Night to Remember

Hymn Sing

Sun., June 7, 6pm

If you’d like to participate

with special music or an inspirational poem/reading, please let Pastor Dan Mohler know.

Have you ever wanted to . . . make Betty Jackson’s potato salad or Nancy Hudler’s fudge or Pastor Steve’s barbecue venison?

Women on Mission (WOM) Cookbooks are available.  Recipes from our ladies and heirloom recipes are included in the book along with Betty’s potato salad, Nancy’s fudge, and Pastor Steve’s venison.

The cookbooks are available for a suggested donation of $10.  The proceeds will enable WOM to help with needs of our church and/or mission projects.

The books make great gifts for many occasions.

Contact Carol Singleton to pick up a copy of the book—before/after services on Sunday mornings.  She’ll be in the hallway by the library.

P.S.  One recipe you’ll just love is “Roast Camel” submitted by Dan and Mary Mohler.  The recipe is shall we say “unusual” for our culture.  It’s well worth the donation just to get this recipe, though.

What Makes A Dad

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more

to add,
He knew His masterpiece

was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad

Vacation Bible School

Boomerang Express

July 13-17, 2009

6-8:30pm

G'day Mate,

Time for Vacation Bible School is almost here!

Come on with us as we go 'down under' on the Boomerang Express. We will spend 5 exciting days learning about the life of Peter and how it 'It All Comes Back to Jesus'.

During this Australian adventure backdrop, the 'Kidaroos' will enjoy fun, games, cool crafts, kid-friendly Christian music, drama and yummy snacks.

During Bible study we'll be learning the Boomerang Challenge:

FOLLOW!

WORSHIP!

LIVE THROUGH HIM!

As one of this year's VBS co-directors, I am inviting you to be a part of the pre-boarding plan for VBS. This year's VBS focus will help children develop a lasting relationship with Jesus. Many children contribute their success to supportive and encouraging people like their parents, teacher, or family. Your willingness to join us in prayer is also a sign of support and encouragement to the kids and teachers who will be involved in VBS.

In addition to praying through the Boomerang Express Prayer Calendar, I am asking you to read aloud and meditate on the following Scriptures each day in June and July!

Blessings,

Tina Gibson
