Greetings in the precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We are in the process of preparing for a most important event in
our church. One of your
deacons, Phil Meekins, is heading up a ministry in Cecil County
called Amazing Grace, Maryland.
Brother Phil has been led of the Lord to expand this outreach to
provide food and clothing to all sorts of needy persons in our area.
They now have a warehouse as well as good suppliers who are
cooperating together to make this all possible.
There are many volunteers from several churches working together
to make all of this possible.
Over 100 families have been helped in the last few months.
One whole family, Dad, Mom, and three children, trusted Christ as
their Savior and Lord as a result of this outreach.
In addition to this Brother Phil will be preaching each Sunday
morning at 8:15 at the Waterfront Worship at North East Town Park from
Memorial Day right through Labor Day!
The deacon body has been encouraging and several have been
working together with him in these endeavors.
They also unanimously recommended that we hold an ordination
council to ordain him to the gospel ministry.
Our church concurred at our business meeting May 11, 2011.
If the council approve him we will have a public service of
ordination on Sunday, June the 12th in our 11 a.m. worship service.
Please pray for brother Phil and Robin Meekins as they prepare
for this important step in their lives.
I believe this is an answer to our prayers for God to send
forth laborers into His harvest field.
That was how Jesus taught us to pray (Matthew 9:38) and Phil just
said, “Yes, Jesus.”
Every time I talk to Phil he has something new that God is
doing to expand these ministries.
At first he said, “God is opening doors.”
Now he says, “God is knocking down walls.”
At first they needed a building, and a local businessman stepped
forward and offered a vacant building; however, he had partners that
needed to agree to the proposal.
Phil asked for prayer.
The partners agreed and the building was secured along with the
electricity being paid, as well.
The first year’s liability insurance was paid by someone else.
They needed freezers for over 1,200 pounds of meat that was being
donated—six were given and two walk-in freezer units are on the way!
They needed some help, and about 20 have volunteered to be
involved! He estimates that
they have about $30,000 worth of food in the warehouse right now, not
including 60 boxes of clothes that have been donated and organized for
distribution! The more they
give away the more God gives them to share.
Everyone who is helping
in this ministry must be a born-again Christian willing to share
their faith with those to whom they minister.
Please pray for this exciting outreach ministry and all those who
are working with it. All for
the glory of God.
Your fellow servant with Christ,
Dr. Stephen D. Hokuf

Single dad was inspiration for Father’s Day
One Sunday in 1909, a young woman named Sonora Smart Dodd sat in a pew
listening to a sermon honoring mothers.
Her mother had died some years before, so her father had raised
her by himself. She began to
wonder why there wasn’t a day to honor fathers.
Sonora decided to arrange for a tribute to be paid to her father at a
church in her hometown of Spokane, Washington.
The date was June 19, 1910.
Many believe that this was the beginning of Father’s Day.
Another view is that Dr. Robert Webb, pastor of Central Church, in
Fairmont, West Virginia, held a service giving tribute to fathers in
1908. Regardless of which
story is the correct one, it is certain that President Calvin Coolidge
was the first president to choose a special day to honor fathers.
He proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day in 1924.
