Cook’s ministry has touched 5 continents

Dr. James R. Cook will be ministering to our men on May 15 and 16 @ the Men’s Retreat and he’ll be preaching for the Sunday morning services on May 17.

Since 1995 Dr. James R. COOK has been involved through missions conferences, Bible conferences, pastors’ conferences and evangelistic crusades across the U.S. and around the world.  He has been asked by the Christian leadership of many nations to come and minister to them.  The results have been gratifying, as Christians have had their faith strengthened and their focus renewed.  His ministry has touched five continents, and also many churches across the U.S. have felt the impact.  The heart of his ministry is to see a rekindling of lives and their devotion to the Lord, and a refocusing on the mission of the church as it touches the world.

Dr. Cook has a wealth of background in missions and pastoral ministry.  His life has been involved with tests of life and death.  His life will be a challenge and encouragement to any and all.  He is a missionary statesman and church leader.

Here’s the highlights of his ministry leading up to 1995:

Born in Truman, Minnesota, Sept. 1930.

 Biographical sketch

Son of missionary parents, serving in Assam, Northeast India, lived there his first 13 years and often traveled with his father into the frontier areas.

Returned to the United States, completed high school and college—played varsity basketball and football and later semi-professional basketball.

Continued his education at Western Conservative Baptist Seminary.

Assistant Pastor, Hinson memorial Baptist Church, Portland, Oregon.

In 1956 he and Mrs. Cook became missionaries with the Conservative Baptist Foreign Mission Society (now CBI), Wheaton, Illinois—serving in the Philippines establishing many churches throughout the Philippines.

Returned to the U.S. serving in the ministry across the nation in missions conferences, Bible conferences and evangelistic crusades.

Then they went to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) to serve—church establishment and related ministries including founding the Ceylon Youth Crusade and Colombo Bible College.

Coached basketball @ the University of Ceylon—3 championships.

Coached national basketball in an international competition.

Served in Hawaii almost 16 years—established the International Baptist Church in 1966 and later the International College and Graduate School of Theology—established a church on each of three neighbor islands.

Had a daily radio ministry and a special ministry to the servicemen and women resulting in invitations to participate in many different military functions, including being asked to speak at the Air Force War College, and the Pentagon numerous occasions.

Military institutions and many navy ships were part of an ongoing tape ministry.

The Cooks were led to First Baptist Church in San Jose (2nd oldest Baptist church in California, established in 1850)—served as Senior Pastor.

Missionary focus became the heartbeat of the church at home and abroad, expanding the support to more than 100 missionary units.

Cook became one of the leading pastors in San Jose.

Sept. 1995, Dr. Cook finished 14 years of ministry at First Baptist Church.

It was a cold . . . day

It was a cold, rainy, and dreary Monday.  One by one some of the ladies of the church arrived.  You would think everyone would stay away as it was so nasty outside.  It was a great day to sleep; but, not for me. I didn’t get any rest on Saturday as there was a wedding here.   Edna Hamilton married Mark Miller (who happens to be Kathy Gray’s father).  How about that!  And, Sunday is ALWAYS a packed house and then . . .

Back to the cold, rainy Monday.  These ladies sure did a lot of giggling.  I had to control myself to not join in.  They were looking at fabric swatches—looking and giggling and giggling.  Then they proceeded to the sanctuary and looked around and giggled some more.  What could they be up to?  Ah! Hah!  I do recall someone mentioning a committee to look into new pew coverings and some fancy, new lights for the sanctuary.  I suppose those ladies will let everyone know soon enough as to what they were up to.
